When did you start fly fishing and who taught you?
I tried fly fishing back when I was seven or eight with a family friend, but just trolled around a lake. He let me keep the rod and reel which kept the passion lit. I didn’t get serious until three years ago when I started reaching for my fly rod every single trip to the river.
Why do you fly fish?
I say to myself, I’d much rather get skunked on a fly rod than a gear rod. It’s my therapy. It’s challenging, it’s rewarding, and you learn something new every trip… and you haven’t even caught a fish yet!!!
If you were only allowed to fish with one fly for the rest of your life (regardless of species), what would it be?
I love the hobo spey. It’s not too big, it’s not too small, and the way it swims drives steelhead nuts.
What is your most memorable fishing experience that didn’t involve the fish?
I just came back from Vancouver Island hunting for summer run steelhead. My buddy Tyler and I camped out the night before drinking craft beer and getting the gear ready for the next day. We headed way back into the cathedral forest and fern jungles exploring sacred steelhead water. To stand amongst the huge old growth trees, understanding how long they’ve protected our rivers, it was an honor to fish in their presence. Definitely a day to remember for the rest of my life!!
What is your favorite Red Truck Rod and favorite Red Truck Reel and why?
My favorite Red Truck rod and reel is the Diesel Switch 7110-4 with the Diesel Chrome reel. This setup suits the size of rivers I typically fish and can handle the species of West Coast salmon and steelhead. It’s the most universal weapon in the arsenal… and I like loud, screaming click and pawl reels!!
