Location: On the banks of the Klickitat River
Target Species: Primarily Steelhead and Trout, but really all of it!
When did you start fly fishing and who taught you?
I started fly fishing when I was 12 years old and learned by watching an old man on the Kern River. I’m totally self-taught. I told my dad I want to be a fly fisherman so he went out and bought me a fly rod and an old Joe Brooks book and that was it.
Why do you fly fish?
Honestly, I have so many answers and just can’t come up with a specific one. It’s one of the things I’ve always been really good at and there are too many reasons why. Both my wife along with my passion for fly fishing make me a better person.
If you were only allowed to fish with one fly for there of your life (regardless of species), what would it be?
A Muddler Minnow! I know for a fact that a tarpon will take it, and I’ve caught trout, bass, pike, dorado on it as well. I’ve hooked more steelhead by skating a muddler than any other fly.
What is your most memorable fishing experience that didn’t involve the fish?
Hahaha…the first one that comes to mind is when I was guiding the Laramie River back in the small overview where we just sat down for a quick meal and to check out the river. I knew from my experience that there were several moose in the area. I warned my clients about being aware of their surroundings and the dangers about running into moose.
Sure enough, as I finish my last words we hear some commotion just ahead of us. It gets louder and louder and suddenly one of my clients comes running and screaming out of the bushes as fast as lightning with a giant moose chasing him from close behind.
We couldn’t help but burst out in laughter as the timing was perfect. My client seemed to be running faster than Bruce Jenner. The words, “Stay out of the moose’s way” was interrupted by my clients yelps. He was from Japan and had never seen a moose until he got chased by one in person. He ended up getting chased up to the edge of the meadow until the moose finally stopped.
What is your favorite Red Truck Rod and favorite Red Truck Reel and why?
As far as the reel goes my favorite is the Diesel Chrome. It’s just badass anyway you look at it. It is similar to one of the legendary reels that influenced this design but is beefed it up. It’s truly an awesome reel all around.
I happen to be really hard on gear, and every single Red Truck fly rod that I’ve used is a workhorse. They cast amazing and I’ve literally never had a single issue with one. I personally really love the 7 wt Switch and the 13’6 foot 7 wt Spey Rod.
